Stone's throw from Aachen
Aachen (Aachen) is a beautiful German city about 30 minutes away by car from Valkenburg. Aachen, just across the border in Germany, is a beautiful city with a rich history and a lively atmosphere. The city is best known for the impressive Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site once built by Charlemagne. Its palatine chapel forms the heart of this Gothic cathedral, and a visit is an absolute must for history buffs.
Next to the Cathedral you will find Aachen’s Town Hall, a beautiful medieval building where emperors were once crowned. In the cozy downtown area, you can enjoy strolling through narrow streets full of stores, boutiques and cafes. Don’t forget to sample an Aachener Printen – a local delicacy similar to spiced cake.

Highly recommended is the climb of the Montagne de Bueren: 374 stairs lead you to a panoramic view of the city.

For foodies, Liège is a feast: taste the famous Liège waffle, drink a local beer or eat stew with Liège syrup on a terrace. The Sunday market La Batte, along the banks of the Meuse, is one of the largest and most sociable markets in Belgium.
